I would like to talk about the completed
Naver webtoon, Dorongi.
It's been a while since I've seen the webtoon,
so I'm cautious about writing it
because there may be some inaccuracies
or parts I skip over,
but I think I can write it only
when I make up my mind,
so I'm trying to relive my memories.
Dorong began serializing every Friday
on Naver Webtoon from December 19, 2019,
and was completed with a total of 73 episodes, including the review, on May 7, 2021.
Personally, I think this is a cartoon
that shows well what Korean fantasy is.
In particular, I really liked the fact that
it included a philosophical theme
along with the growth of the main character.
(It was a work that appealed to my taste).
What makes the setting unique
and attractive is that there is a butcher
who slaughters Imoogi,
which is treated as a spirit animal,
and the main character is
a member of the Imoogi butcher's family.
And because the Imoogi need
the help of humans to become dragons,
and spirit creatures must protect humans,
even when the people in the main character's
family slaughter the Imoogi,
they do not resist and die.
Dorong's story is divided into childhood
and adolescence.
During his childhood, the main character,
Kwon Sam-ok, was born into a family of Imoogi butchers
and committed killing Imoogi
without any suspicion.
Rather, he had doubts about his brother
killing the Imoogi,
but he first thought about the Imoogi
when he met Dorongi,
an Imoogi who came to become a dragon.
Unlike the other imoogis
who have dead eyes and the shaman
tells Sambok that the amulet will
no longer be useful
because he has already committed
many sins, Do-rong makes Sambok
suspicious by giving him proper knowledge
about things he has taken for granted.
Through this, you think again about yourself
and your family.
Sambok, who was suffering,
ends his childhood by saying
that he will make Dorong into a dragon
because he has no intention of running away from his family's sins,
but he also does not think
that Dorong is wrong.
Afterwards, Sambok's life is expressed
as follows through the contrast
between black and white in the work.
Sambok was born as a butcher
and lived without knowing that sin was a sin.
A fact he stumbled upon
has him still taking a stand for life.
Even though he knew it was a sin,
he stayed in the family
and committed many murders.
Because he remained in the family
and expressed his opinions,
the frequency of his killings
was greatly reduced.
And in the beginning of the year,
Sambok's older brother takes over the family and the monster outside the mountain,
Cheolgi, appears in earnest.
(When Sambok was a child,
he wanted to come into Sambok's family land, but he was not allowed to
because of the amulet. Instead,
he met Eunnan and cooperated.)
Her older brother,
who was reluctant to kill an Imoogi
that could speak and communicate
when he was young,
did not hesitate to kill an Imoogi to save the
family after inheriting the family.
Conversely, Sambok becomes increasingly
reluctant to kill an Imoogi.
However,
when Dorong turned 1,000 years old,
Sambok saw Dorong and told him
that Dorong was a dragon,
but Dorong could not become a dragon.
(One of the conditions for
the Imoogi's ascension is
for humans to call it a dragon)
To find out why Dorong couldn't
become a dragon,
Sambok sets out to find a shaman,
and the area outside the mountain
where they first go is full of people
suffering from drought.
Sambok, without anyone telling him,
intuits that this drought is
due to the absence of a dragon that brings rain, and realizes the guilt of their family.
Meanwhile, Nan,
who has been blind since childhood,
is with Kang Cheol,
whom she met at Sambok's mountain,
and Kang Cheol cooperates with Nan to somehow get into Sambok's mountain.
The amulet that protects
Sambok's mountain could only be removed by a member of Sambok's family,
and Nan used Samo's newborn child to remove the amulet, allowing Cheol to enter the mountain.
After entering the mountain, Kang Cheol begins to burn and kill all the people of Sambok's family,
and Kang Cheol meets Dorong.
Do-rong chooses a different path from Cheol-cheol, saying that he hates humans, but that doesn't mean he should kill them. Cheol-cheol worries that Do-rong may have suffered at the hands of humans.
Kang Cheol frees the Imoogi from the breeding farm,
and the Imoogi and Kang Cheol kill the Imoogi Baekjeong family members.
Sambok also loses an eye and an arm, and he realizes that he has been unknowingly prioritizing the lives of his family members and trivializing other lives, and returns to Dorongi to apologize on behalf of the Baekjeong family.
Dorong says that he cannot represent the Imoogis as he only pursues ideals and ignores the suffering of his people, but he thanks them for coming to apologize.
Sambok discovers the true form of a dragon in Dorong accepting the apple, and when Sambok recognizes Dorong as a true dragon and calls him a dragon, Dorong ascends to heaven.
Dorong, who ascended to heaven, makes it rain to put out the fire and save everyone's lives.
The incident is resolved and Sambok becomes a two-faced character, a survivor of the Baekjeong family that killed the Imoogi and a close friend of the Imoogi who ascended the dragon, and the Imoogi keep him alive to see what kind of life he will lead in the future.
Finally, Dorong, who became a dragon and met Samboki, tells Sambok to live well so that the Imoogis do not make a wrong choice about what kind of life he will live in the future, and Sambok travels around the country to apologize to the Imoogis and guide them back to the mountain that was originally the land of the Imoogis. I go around persuading.
The story ends with Sambok telling Dorong that he will live well from now on.
It was a good work that made us think about what good and evil are and what sin is, and did not miss out on the fun.
(If you want to taste the key-pointing lines that appear from time to time, be sure to watch the main episode!)
